spinach and sunchokes and sorrel, oh my!

this afternoon i am heading to pick up our second csa box of the season from harmony valley farm.  i really enjoyed using all of the yummy veggies in our first box and trying lots of new recipes.  i tried four veggies that i had never even heard of before -- sunchokes, sorrel, hon tsai tai, and nettles (watch out, they sting!).

nettles were the featured vegetable of the week, and the article about them frightened me.  i was instructed to hold the leafy greens with tongs or rubber gloves while thoroughly washing them to avoid getting stung.  all i could think was "and i'm supposed to eat  these???".  i wilted them into a soup with sunchokes and other vegetables, then i blended the mixture with a touch of cream (the recipe was provided in harmony valley's weekly newsletter).  we all loved it, but i think william loved it the most!

as i've mentioned before, i am still reading "animal, vegetable, miracle" by barbara kingsolver (i know, i'm a slow reader!), and it is a great book to read in conjunction with doing a csa.  it reiterates all of the important reasons to eat fresh, local, in-season foods.  a couple of items on the menu for the upcoming week include pea vine quesadillas and asparagus grilled cheese.  yum!

i transplanted all of my seedlings outside last week, and they are all thriving.  well, except for the cucumbers, which shriveled and died almost right before my eyes.  perhaps this unseasonably warm weather was too much of a shock for them!

i hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Nettles... you brave girl! I have had one wonderful csa experience and one really awful one. This year, I'm doing farmer's markets and creating my own locally grown veggie box.

That picture looks like one from 'The Exorcist' :-). That boy likes his veggies! They go great with kibble!
