My New Toy

Hello?  Is anyone still out there?  After 3 1/2 months of not posting on the blog...here I am!  I got out of touch with posting because I lost our digital camera (oops!), so I had only a few pictures that I had taken on my iPhone for a few months.  Then, for my golden birthday in late December, Aaron surprised me with a wonderful gift - a shiny new DSLR camera!  I had only used point-and-shoot cameras before, so I was excited about the chance to take some more creative pictures.  Thankfully the camera came with four classes so I could learn how to use it; so for I've taken two.  I've had a lot of fun playing around with the camera, but I still have a lot to learn!

So, going forward, the blog will still be for family updates, but it will also be a forum for me to participate in some online photo link-ups.

I will get a lot of use out of my new toy to take pictures of William, and of his new baby brother/sister due to arrive in early August!

This week I am participating in You Capture, and the topic is "Circles".  This was an easy topic for me to photograph because William's prized possession is none other than a roll of blue painter's tape! (seriously...not at all joking).  You may notice that the roll of tape has seen better days; that is because it has been dropped in the bathtub and chewed on by a friend's dog, among other things.  So, without further ado, I reveal my first photo experiment on my new camera.  Bear with me and Enjoy!  (if any of you photographers out there have any tips/advice, please feel free to comment!)

My boy and his prized possession.

Shutter speed way too slow on this one, but it still turned out kind of cool!  I mean, I totally did that on purpose.

We live in an old house with poor lighting, so I had to raise the ISO, but then the image gets a bit grainy.  Arg!  I've been trying to avoid using the flash indoors, but maybe I need to?

The only item William will allow in his stroller is his roll of tape (and occasionally his favorite book).  If you put a baby in there he will immediately throw it on the floor.  What a great big-brother-to-be!

Here are some other circles I found around the house.  I tried to utilize window light that I learned about in a tutorial over at The Creative Mama.  I would love to use William as my subject for the window light photos, but he won't stand still in front of the window long enough for me to take a picture!

My boys love duct tape rolls too! Must be a man thing. I love the light reflecting through the mason jars too.

Ahh the art of being young and not needing anythign specific to entertain you.

Plus mom2nji is right the light in the mason jars is great.

Cute photos! My 13 year old still loves to make things out of duct tape so I got him 3 rolls of different colors for Christmas. He only had grey in the past so he was excited! Congrats on the new camera!

Very nice! When I was learning to use my camera, I found the sites:
www.iheartfaces.com and www.digital-photography-school.com really helpful.

First off... congrats on the new family member to be. You have plenty of time to learn to use the new camera so you can take amazing pictures of the new baby when he/she arrives.

As for the high ISO vs. flash... you should look into getting a lightscoop. They're cheaper than a flash and so far, I've really loved the results. One of these days, I'm going to blog about it.

And that tape...I love when kids attach themselves to funny things like that.

I'm glad you are back to blogging. I look forward to seeing you around more. :)

These are great shots!!!! Looks like you are getting a handle on your new toy. I seriously think trial and error is sometimes the best way to learn. Keep playing around and you will get it :D

Great photos! I love the first one most of all! Maybe you can teach me. I spent a whole morning with 180 bald eagles and didn't get one decent pic of them!

Your story is so similar to mine. I have always loved taking pictures but always had point and shoot. Before a recent vacation for my husband's 30th birthday to Niagara Falls we invested in a DSLR-I am so addicted now! But also still learning. I am taking a weekend class by the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Asheville, NC this weekend-they have them all over-it may be worth checking to see if they are near you! Your pictures are awesome so far!
