feeding, eating, and growing

sometimes i feel like i spend the majority of my day making sure everyone gets fed. before i've been out of bed an hour i've already nursed william, fed him breakfast, made aaron breakfast and lunch to take to work (although, i admit, i do not always get around to doing that), then feed brinkley...and finally it's breakfast time for me!

as if i needed another "mouth" to feed, yesterday i did this:

i planted seeds of a variety of vegetables and herbs, including cucumbers (for canning dill pickles...yum!), peas, lettuce, thyme, basil, and a few types of tomatoes. i am a novice gardener at best, but i'd like to learn more. right now i'm reading "animal, vegetable, miracle" by barbara kingsolver. for an entire year her family ate nothing but locally grown/raised foods (with a few minor exceptions such as coffee and olive oil). so much of our food is trucked, flown, or shipped across the world. think of the impact that the transport of a banana or pineapple has on the environment! although i will not be able to go to the lengths that her family did, we are trying to focus on eating more local goods. we signed up for our first csa (community supported agriculture) this year, and i hope to till up a garden this fall that i can use next year (this year the veggies and herbs will be grown in planters). i am excited to (hopefully) see these seeds sprout into plants over the next few weeks. wish me luck!

speaking of feeding and growing...look how big our baby has gotten!

he started babbling last week, and my heart swells each time he says "mamamama". i know he doesn't know what he's saying yet, but it's the first step.

and speaking of steps...check this out!

have a happy tuesday!

Good luck with your veggies & herbs! I think Scott and I are going to make a real effort to hit up the farmer's market this summer, Sassy always has us up early on the weekends anyway, might as well do something when we are up :) Looking forward to seeing you and William in a few weeks!!
